Conclusions

To declare any literary creation as a God figure weighs down that figure with a challenging amount of baggage. Western readers frequently associate the idea of God with something wholly other and expect anything classed as deity to possess qualities such as omniscience, omnipotence, and omnipresence. But the comparison occurs on a far simpler level. The biblical writers constantly sought out ways to make the idea of God accessible to a human community. So even ideas such as creator and lawgiver found parallels in the human capacity to generate new life and to serve as moral exemplar. Further, the concept of father parallels a human role that carries great authority and power and yet also makes space for love, compassion, and nurture.

Carlisle, the vampire “father” of the Cullen family, functions in all these capacities in the Twilight saga. Without him, the family would not exist. Lacking him, they would not embody a way of being vampire apart from the norm. And absent his presence, they would prove unable to function as a unit designed to promote their mutual survival, their growth into their best possible selves, and their development of bonds of love and respect.
